Understanding Birth Trauma
Your feelings are a valid response to an overwhelming event.
Birth trauma is subjective; it is defined not by the clinical events of the birth, but by your personal experience of it. It can involve feeling invisible, unheard, or unsafe during what should have been a supported transition.
Recognising the Signs & Impact
Emotional Signs
You may experience intrusive memories or flashbacks of the birth, feeling as though you are reliving the event. Hyper-vigilance, intense anxiety, or a persistent sense of being 'one edge' are common emotional indicators.
Physical Impact
Trauma often settles in the body. You might face profound exhaustion that rest cannot fix, physical tension, heart palpitations, or sleep disturbances that persist even when your baby is sleeping safely.
Relational Impact
It may feel difficult to bond with your baby, or you might find yourself feeling detached from your partner and loved ones. These are protective responses of a system that has been overwhelmed by trauma.
Pathways to Healing
Recovery is possible with specialist perinatal support. We utilise evidence-based approaches like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and trauma-focused CBT.
Healing involves processing the memory so it no longer feels present and overwhelming, allowing you to move forward with grace.
